Today I went to the city public library to pick up a special order book for my mother... don't remember the book name, one of her favorite fiction authors, an inter-library loan. It had already been checked out for her so I just had to grab it at the desk and go. Ran into a friend and chatted a few minutes, then glided out through the front swinging "gate" system just inside the entry door, stopping to see what new pamphlets were available on special events.
I heard an odd bell alarm as I passed through the gate but really didn't think anything of it until I saw one of the library female security guards yelling at a man "don't go through that gate". Anyway next she gave me a very stern look, pointed a finger at me and yelled over "you set off the alarm, you have to come back in here!!!" I kind of laughed and said "sure hon"... and I walked back through the gate into the library foyer. It thought at the time it would be funny if I said "Shhhh this is a LIBRARY" but she looked so close to tackling me I thought best not make her snap. Is there something about being a security guard that makes you think everyone else is evil? This woman looked at me like I was the incarnation of the devil. Perhaps it was the grin on my face she resented.
A kindly looking library lady (wearing a cardigan I might add) waved me over to the main counter and I showed her the book I had just picked up. She said "oh, inter-library!" as if that would explain the whole security alarm issue to me. I said "yep it is". She said "you're ok". I looked at her and said "yes I know." We both smiled.
So once again I walk through the gate, once again the alarm sounds. This time the library lady speaks directly to the guard.."She's ok"....but I still I got quite a nasty glare from security.
Just glad they don't issue guns... I have a feeling I would have had the book shot from my hand.
Whew. :)
